HTML and DHTML Overviews/Tutorials explains why insertCell takes much longer than createElement and appendElement. For 107 rows in a table, insertCell takes 52 seconds in IE compared to 100ms in Firefox. The DOM methods take comparable amounts of time (approx. 200ms in IE, 100ms in FF).
